SIGNALMAN AVERTS TRAGEDY AT RADSTOCK CROSSING.
Car Crashes Into Gates As Train Approaches.
A motor-car, driven by Mr H. B. Jones, manager of Radstock Collieries, crashed into the level-crossing gates on the Great Western Railway line, in the centre of Radstock, just before the last train to Frome was due to pass over the crossing.
Luckily, the signalman, Mr W Carvey, realised the imminent danger, and at once set the home signal to “danger.” The driver of the oncoming train drew up just before reaching the crossing.
A serious accident was undoubtedly averted by the signalman’s presence of mind and prompt action.
The gate and its mechanism were badly damaged, and a breakdown gang from Frome was called to repair the damage before work could be resumed next morning.
